Shopify Page Builder Apps Compared: PageFly vs Shogun vs GemPages

Page builders are the classic "install once, forget forever" subscription. You build one landing page, it works, and then you keep paying $24–99/mo for two years while making zero edits. Here's what each tool actually offers — and how to know when to cancel.

The Page Builder Subscription Trap

Page builders are the most common zombie app category in AppTrim scans, second only to abandoned loyalty programs. The typical lifecycle: a merchant needs one custom landing page for a sale or product launch, installs a page builder, builds the page, and then never opens the app again. The subscription keeps billing.

The other common pattern: a merchant installs a page builder, then switches to a new Shopify theme that includes built-in section customization (OS 2.0 themes), and the page builder is no longer necessary — but the subscription stays active.

Before installing a page builder: check whether your current Shopify theme supports section groups and custom templates. Shopify's built-in editor has improved dramatically since 2022 — most OS 2.0 themes can build landing pages that would have required a page builder app two years ago.

Pricing Comparison

AppFree TierEntry PaidMid TierTop Tier
PageFly1 published page$24/mo (Pay-As-You-Go)$99/mo (Unlimited)$199/mo (Premium)
ShogunNo$39/mo (Build)$99/mo (Measure)$499/mo (Advanced)
GemPages1 published page$29/mo (Build)$59/mo (Optimize)$199/mo (Enterprise)

Prices as of May 2026. "Free tier" limitations: PageFly and GemPages allow 1 published page on free but full drafting and templates available. Annual billing saves 20–25%.

PageFly

PageFly is the most widely installed Shopify page builder — it has the largest template library and the lowest entry price. The free tier (1 published page) is the most genuinely usable free plan in this category: you can draft unlimited pages, just only keep one live at a time. This makes it suitable for single landing page use cases without paying anything.

The editor is drag-and-drop with a column/section model familiar to anyone who has used Elementor or Webflow. Mobile preview is strong. The element library covers countdown timers, review embeds, video blocks, and product bundles out of the box. Support is responsive and the documentation is thorough.

The Pay-As-You-Go tier ($24/mo) charges by published page count, which can creep up if you're running lots of campaign-specific landing pages. If you're building more than 4–5 pages, the Unlimited plan at $99/mo is better value.

Best for

  • • Stores needing 1–2 landing pages
  • • Teams who want the largest template library
  • • Budget-conscious stores ($24/mo entry)
  • • Single-page use case (free tier covers it)

Not ideal for

  • • Teams needing built-in A/B testing
  • • Stores wanting analytics per-page
  • • High-volume page creation (Pay-As-You-Go adds up)
  • • Enterprise brand control requirements

Shogun

Shogun targets brands where conversion rate optimization is an ongoing function, not just a one-time page build. The "Measure" plan ($99/mo) includes split testing and analytics at the page level — you can run controlled A/B tests on landing page variants and measure conversion impact directly, which PageFly and GemPages don't offer at their equivalent price points.

The Build plan ($39/mo) is competitive for page building alone, but without the analytics features it's not much more capable than PageFly at $24/mo. The main reason to pay the Shogun premium is if CRO testing is part of your regular workflow — that requires the Measure tier.

Common overspend: merchants on Shogun Advanced ($499/mo) who signed up for the full feature set during a growth push, then reduced activity and never downgraded. Check whether you're using the advanced features (personalization, AI, multi-user roles) or if you're paying Advanced prices for Build-tier usage.

GemPages

GemPages is the best price-to-feature ratio in this category for stores that want more than PageFly's free tier but don't need Shogun's testing suite. At $29/mo (Build) you get unlimited pages, a solid component library, and fast performance. The editor feels slightly less polished than PageFly, but the element set is comparable.

The Optimize tier ($59/mo) adds A/B testing at a lower price point than Shogun Measure ($99/mo), making it the best option for stores that want CRO testing without the Shogun premium.

GemPages is popular with dropshipping-style stores that need to spin up product page variants quickly. If that describes your use case, the template library is well-suited. For brand-forward DTC, PageFly or Shogun typically offers more refined design options.

When You Don't Need a Page Builder

Shopify's native editor (Online Store 2.0) has closed much of the gap with third-party page builders. If your theme supports:

  • Metaobjects and custom metafields (custom content blocks)
  • Section groups (header/footer customization per template)
  • Custom landing page templates in theme editor
  • App blocks for review embeds and countdown timers

…then you can build most landing pages without a third-party page builder. Dawn, Impulse, Prestige, and most paid themes from 2023+ support all of the above.

Is Your Page Builder a Zombie Subscription?

AppTrim scans your Shopify billing history and flags page builders that haven't been used in 60+ days — or stores paying for a Shogun Advanced plan when their actual usage is Build-tier. If you installed a page builder for one campaign and forgot about it, we'll find it. Free scan, no credit card.
