Shopify Popup Apps Compared: Privy vs OptiMonk vs Klaviyo vs Justuno

Popup and lead capture apps are one of the trickiest categories to evaluate because the tool you need depends heavily on what email platform you already use. Many Shopify merchants end up paying for a popup app when they're already paying for one as part of their email tool.

The Popup Double-Billing Problem

If you use Klaviyo for email, you already have a built-in popup builder. Klaviyo's Signup Forms feature lets you create exit-intent popups, embedded forms, and flyouts — all included in your Klaviyo plan at no extra charge. Subscribers captured via Klaviyo forms go directly into your Klaviyo lists with full event tracking.

Despite this, a significant number of Klaviyo users also pay for Privy, OptiMonk, or Justuno to run popups. The typical origin story: they installed the popup app first, it was working, and they never removed it when they upgraded to Klaviyo. They're now capturing leads twice (both tools fire), storing them in two lists, and paying separately for a feature they already have.

AppTrim scan finding: Paying for both Privy and Klaviyo is the second most common duplicate subscription we surface — after multiple loyalty programs. The combined cost averages $50–90/mo in wasted overlap.

Prices as of May 2026. Privy's popup-only Convert plan excludes email sending. OptiMonk prices by pageview volume. Annual billing saves ~20%.

Klaviyo Signup Forms (Free with Klaviyo)

Klaviyo's form builder is genuinely capable: exit intent, timed triggers, scroll-based triggers, embedded and flyout formats, A/B testing on form variants, and mobile-specific targeting are all included. Forms integrate natively with Klaviyo lists and flows, so a new subscriber can trigger a welcome sequence immediately with zero extra configuration.

The main limitation is design flexibility. Klaviyo forms are harder to style to pixel-perfect brand specs than Privy or OptiMonk. If your brand identity is strong and your popup needs to match your visual design system exactly, a dedicated popup tool offers more control. For most stores, Klaviyo forms are sufficient.

Rule of thumb: if you pay for Klaviyo, use Klaviyo forms for your popups. Only pay for a dedicated popup tool if you have a specific design, targeting, or A/B testing need that Klaviyo forms can't meet.

Privy

Privy built its reputation as the go-to popup tool for new Shopify merchants: quick setup, good templates, and a forgiving free tier. The spin-to-win wheel and cart saver popup formats are genuinely effective conversion tools. For stores not on Klaviyo, Privy is the most accessible popup option.

The Convert plan ($30/mo) covers popup functionality only — no email sending. If you enable email campaigns or automations in Privy, you step up to $45+/mo, which creates the dangerous overlap situation if you're also paying for Klaviyo or Omnisend.

Privy is the right choice when: you don't use Klaviyo, your list is under 5K contacts, and you want a fast setup without complex segmentation. It's the wrong choice when you already have a Klaviyo plan — you're duplicating a feature you already paid for.

OptiMonk

OptiMonk is the most conversion-optimisation-focused popup tool in this category. Where Privy and Klaviyo forms prioritise simplicity, OptiMonk offers advanced targeting: target by cart value, by UTM source, by number of sessions, by product page viewed, by customer tag (for logged-in Shopify customers), and more. The A/B testing suite allows multivariate testing across popup variants.

The free tier (1 active campaign, 15K pageviews/mo) is functional for small stores. The Essential plan ($39/mo, 5 campaigns) is competitive with Privy Convert. The main reason to pay the OptiMonk premium over Privy: you run targeted popups by segment (e.g., show discount popup only to first-time visitors from paid ads, not to returning customers) — that kind of targeting requires OptiMonk or Justuno, not Privy.

Justuno

Justuno is the premium option, positioned above OptiMonk with AI-driven personalization: product recommendations inside popups, dynamic content blocks that change based on visitor profile, and predictive triggers. It integrates deeply with loyalty programs and customer data platforms.

At $45/mo entry and $145/mo for full features, Justuno makes sense for stores doing $1M+ revenue where personalized conversion optimization has measurable ROI. For most Shopify stores, the additional capability over OptiMonk is difficult to justify.
