Most Shopify merchants don't need a third-party shipping app at all — until they do. Here's the threshold where each app starts to justify its cost, and what you actually get for it.
Shopify Shipping — Shopify's built-in label printing and carrier integration — is genuinely good for stores processing under 150 orders per month with straightforward domestic shipping. It provides discounted USPS, UPS, and DHL Express rates, prints labels directly from the Shopify admin, and requires no additional app.
Third-party shipping apps become relevant when you need: multi-carrier rate shopping, batch label printing for high volume, international duties and customs automation, 3PL or warehouse integration, or branded tracking pages. Here's when each makes sense.
Signals you may need a third-party shipping app
| App | 50 shipments/mo | 200 shipments/mo | 1000 shipments/mo |
|---|---|---|---|
| ShipStation | $9.99/mo (Starter) | $29.99/mo (Silver) | $99.99/mo (Gold) |
| Shippo | ~$2.50 (pay-per-label) | $0 (volume gets monthly plan) | $69/mo (Professional) |
| EasyShip | Free (limited) | $29/mo (Plus) | $99/mo (Premium) |
| Shopify Shipping | Free (included) | Free (included) | Free (included) |
Note: Carrier rate savings may offset subscription costs. Actual savings depend on package dimensions, zones, and negotiated rates.
ShipStation's primary value proposition is multi-channel order aggregation. If you sell on Shopify, Amazon, eBay, Etsy, and Walmart simultaneously, ShipStation pulls all orders into one interface, applies shipping rules automatically, prints batch labels, and pushes tracking back to each platform. This workflow is genuinely hard to replicate without a dedicated tool.
For Shopify-only sellers, ShipStation is often overkill. The Starter plan at $9.99/mo (50 shipments) is a reasonable test, but Shopify Shipping handles the same label printing for free. The value of ShipStation for single-channel Shopify stores is primarily in rate shopping across more carriers and automation rules (e.g., automatically apply flat rate boxes to orders under 5 lbs shipping to Zone 4).
ShipStation does well
ShipStation limitations
Best for:
Sellers on 3+ channels (Shopify + marketplaces) or high-volume single-channel Shopify stores (200+ orders/mo) who need automation rules and multi-carrier rate shopping.
Shippo's standout feature is its pricing model: a pay-per-label option at 5¢ per shipment with no monthly commitment, plus monthly plans starting at $19/mo for higher volume with discounted carrier rates. For stores with highly variable monthly order volume (seasonal spikes, holiday surges), the pay-per-label model eliminates the waste of paying for a high-shipment plan during slow months.
Shippo integrates with Shopify, pulls orders automatically, and provides discounted USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL rates. The interface is clean and easier to navigate than ShipStation for teams new to multi-carrier shipping. International shipping is supported but lacks the duties automation that EasyShip offers.
Best for:
Stores with seasonal volume spikes who want the flexibility of pay-per-label during slow periods. Also the best entry point for stores testing multi-carrier shipping before committing to a subscription.
EasyShip is built for stores that ship internationally at meaningful volume. Its key differentiator is automated duties and taxes: it calculates DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) pricing at checkout, so customers see the final landed cost including import duties rather than getting a surprise customs bill at delivery. This feature alone significantly reduces international order abandonment and delivery disputes.
EasyShip also provides a branded tracking page and automated shipping notifications, which Shopify Shipping doesn't offer at the same level of customization. The free plan handles basic international shipping with limited features. Paid plans starting at $29/mo unlock DDP pricing, more carriers, and batch processing.
EasyShip does well
EasyShip limitations
Best for:
Shopify stores with significant international order volume where DDP pricing, duties calculation, and customs documentation are real operational concerns. Less compelling for domestic-only sellers.
You're Shopify-only, under 200 orders/mo, domestic shipping
→ Shopify Shipping (free)
Already included. Discounted USPS/UPS/DHL rates, label printing from admin. No additional app needed until you hit volume or multi-channel complexity.
You sell on Amazon, eBay, and Shopify simultaneously
→ ShipStation ($29.99–99.99/mo)
Multi-channel aggregation is ShipStation's core value proposition. The time savings on order sync alone justify the cost at this scale.
Your order volume is seasonal or unpredictable
→ Shippo (pay-per-label at 5¢)
Zero monthly commitment during slow months. Scale up to a monthly plan when volume warrants it.
20%+ of your orders ship internationally
→ EasyShip ($29–99/mo)
DDP pricing reduces delivery disputes and checkout abandonment on international orders. Pays for itself by reducing customs complications.
You're a high-volume single-channel Shopify store (500+ orders/mo)
→ ShipStation Gold ($99.99/mo) or Shippo Professional ($69/mo)
Rate shopping savings across multiple carriers typically offset the subscription cost at this volume. Compare rate quotes before choosing.
