How do I know if a Shopify app was removed from the App Store?

The App Store listing tells you. Here's what to look for, and how to check all your storefront apps at once.

How do I know if a Shopify app was removed from the App Store? Open the app's listing on the Shopify App Store. If the page says "This app is not currently available on the Shopify App Store", the app has been delisted, which Shopify describes as removing it from the App Store, temporarily or permanently, and blocking new installs. If the listing page doesn't load at all, the listing is gone. To check every app on your storefront in one go, put your store address into our free delisted app checker.

Install on the Shopify App Store

Check one app yourself

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Apps. That's the list of apps installed on your store right now.
  2. Find the app on the Shopify App Store. Search by name, or use the listing link from the developer's website or help docs.
  3. Read the listing. A live one shows the app's pricing, reviews and an install button. A delisted one says "This app is not currently available on the Shopify App Store."
  4. If the listing page won't load at all, the listing has been taken down.

Missing from search doesn't mean removed

App Store search is a bad test. Shopify has two kinds of public apps, listed and unlisted, and unlisted apps never appear in search results or categories. You can still install them from a direct link to their listing (Shopify Help Center, About apps). So when an app doesn't come up in search, open its listing page before you assume the worst.

Check every storefront app at once

If you run a lot of apps, checking them one by one gets old fast. Our free delisted app checker does it for the apps on your storefront. You enter your store address and it loads your homepage and one product page the way a shopper would. It picks out the apps that are switched on there (theme app blocks and embeds, app extension files, scripts an app added, tracking pixels an app set up), opens each app's App Store page and reports what the listing says today. No signup, and nothing is saved.

It only sees what loads on your storefront. Apps that run only in your admin, checkout or billing won't show up, so check those by hand.

Put in your store address and see which of your storefront apps are off the Shopify App Store right now.

For apps the checker can't see, start from your bill

App subscriptions and usage fees billed through Shopify land on your Shopify bill. In your admin, go to Settings > Billing, click View current charges for what's pending, and look through Past bills for what you've paid. One-time app purchases come on separate invoices, and some apps bill you outside Shopify, so those never show up on the Shopify bill at all (Shopify Help Center, App charges on your Shopify bills).

AppTrim reads your Shopify billing invoice, lists every app charge, and flags apps that do the same job. Use it to spot tools you no longer need and apps still billing after you uninstalled them. With that list in front of you, open each app's listing and check it the same way. The walkthrough for the bill itself is in how to read your Shopify billing invoice, and the apps that bill you directly are covered in what your Shopify bill does not show.

Found one? What it means for your store

Delisting blocks new installs and leaves the app on your store. Even when Shopify removes an app for breaking its rules, merchants who have it installed can keep using it until the removal date (Shopify Help Center, Enforcement of Shopify's Partner Program Policies). A Shopify-billed app keeps billing while it's installed, because uninstalling is what cancels future recurring charges (Shopify Help Center, Uninstalling apps).

Quick FAQ

How do I know if a Shopify app was removed from the App Store?

Open the app's listing on the Shopify App Store. If the page says "This app is not currently available on the Shopify App Store", the app has been delisted, which Shopify describes as removing it from the App Store, temporarily or permanently, and blocking new installs. If the listing page doesn't load at all, the listing is gone. To check every app on your storefront in one go, put your store address into our free delisted app checker.

What does delisted mean on the Shopify App Store?

Shopify uses delisting to mean removing an app from the Shopify App Store, temporarily or permanently, and blocking new installs. It is one of the actions Shopify lists for apps that break its Partner Program rules.

Why can't I find an app in Shopify App Store search?

It may be unlisted rather than removed. Unlisted public apps don't show up in App Store search results or categories, but you can still install them from a direct link to their listing. Open the listing page to see whether the app is still available.

Does the delisted app checker see every app I have installed?

No. It only sees apps that load on your storefront, such as theme app blocks, app embeds, scripts and tracking pixels on your homepage and one product page. Apps that run only in your admin, checkout or billing won't show up, so check those against your Shopify bill.
